本片改編自布萊恩摩爾的暢銷小說，布萊恩根據耶穌會所記載有關傳教士在法蘭西區的早期活動，撰寫成拉佛格神父的傳奇故事，并謹慎地將一段著名的歷史戲劇化，從中能一窺早期北美的歷史。
故事發生在1634年，一個年輕神父穿過北美荒野，來到加拿大向當地的印第安人傳教。其間他的隨從愛上了印第安酋長的女兒。惡劣的自然環境以及印第安人古老的生活方式使得他開始懷疑自己的使命是否正確。死亡的恐懼也在威脅著他們。
