Richard（萊昂內爾·斯坦德 Lionel Stander 飾）和Albie開著車，Albie的槍走火射中了自己，Richard只能到附近的島上尋求幫助。島上住著一對夫妻：George（唐納德·普利森斯 Donald Pleasence 飾）和Teresa（弗朗索瓦·朵列 Fran?oise Dorléac 飾）。Teresa淘氣愛玩，而George則懦弱無能。兩人在Richard的威脅下一起埋葬了死去的Albie，并和Richard一起等待他的老板卡特派來的人來接他。不久，George的老朋友們來島上看望他，Richard則偽裝成他們的園丁。他們和Richard之間的矛盾不斷加劇，終于釀成一場血腥慘案......
